Do You Need a License to Get Car Insurance?
Well, one thing that is true is that you do not need a driver’s license to buy a car. However, if you want that car to be road ready, you will need to get some car insurance to cover you when you’re driving on public road. Almost every single state in the US, except for two of them, has a requirement that you have your car covered by some insurance if you want to drive it on the street. Since auto insurance is given under the assumption that the car is going to be driven, it only makes sense that you pretty much do need a license to get on the road.
There are however a few instances in which you will be able to get vehicle coverage without a valid driver’s license. First of all, if you have a Mexican identification card and you’re just in the US for a little while, then you may be able to get some insurance. That’s because some states will accept that as a driver’s license if you’re valid to drive in Mexico of course. You can also get car insurance if you’re unable to drive but you own a vehicle. Say for example you’re disabled and someone else will be driving you around. In that case you’d be able to basically pay the car insurance costs of whoever will be driving you to appointments and helping you run errands.
Sometimes if you have gotten your license suspended you will have to get insurance before they can give your insurance back. You will have to shop around because of this hard catch-22. Some places don’t want to give you insurance without a license so if you need a license to get insurance and insurance to get a license, you’re not completely out of luck. There are specific insurance companies that specialize in getting you what you need no matter what. These are companies that give their employees a greater degree of flexibility in what they need to get you, the customer what you want. Of course your insurance premiums might be a little bit higher but it will be worth it to get what you need from your insurance, rather than risking it to go without insurance.
The benefits of having health insurance are that you will not be liable if something bad happens to you on the road. Car insurance covers many different aspects of car ownership and driving, which is why it is usually legally required by every state. The only two states which do not require auto coverage are New Hampshire and Virginia. Even if you find yourself in one of those states, you should still get insurance. Otherwise you may find yourself in a bind when you get into an accident and find yourself liable for all the damages!
Even in states that don’t require insurance, you still might pay big. For example, in VA, if you choose not to have car insurance, you still have to pay $500 to the state in order to have the privilege of not having insurance, so it’s still quite expensive. Is compulsory insurance a good thing? Yes, because it makes sure that everyone on the road is going to be able to pay if they do something to your car. You would always hope the people around you on the highway have insurance, so it only makes sense that you would have to have it too. It’s all for the greater good.
If you don’t have a driver’s license you probably can’t get car insurance so you should do everything you can to get your license back as soon as possible. You should fulfill any class requirements and be a good driver once your license has been returned to you so that you will qualify for some discounts once you have been on the road for a while.
